The Therapeutic Clown Program
The Toronto District School Board offers classes to students in all grades from
kindergarten to grade 12.
The Children’s Council is a group of patients and former patients who give the hospital
advice on how to make Sick Kids an even better place for children.
The Family Advisory Committee is a group of volunteers – parents, grandparents, &
former patients – who give the hospital advice on issues that affect patients and families.
Every year approximately 1,200 people in the Volunteer Resources department
volunteer almost 87,000 hours of service in many areas of the hospital.
The Atrium
The Atrium includes 9 stories of clinical space above ground and a service floor below
ground level.
All patients and patient related services moved to the Atrium on March 14, 1993.
Approximately 800 babies annually are admitted to the NICU (Neo-natal Intensive
Care Unit) on the 3rd floor.
The Atrium was designed by Zeidler Roberts Architects, the same architects who
designed the Eaton Centre.
Hospital regulations decree that all patient rooms must have windows (that’s why most
hospitals have many wings) because natural light helps promote the healing process.
Most patients (85%) have a private room, with a full private washroom, storage space
for parent and child’s clothing, TV, phone and a day bed so a parent can stay the night.
