The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) is a health-care community dedicated to
improving the health of children. Its mission is to provide the best in familycentred,
compassionate care, to lead in scientific and clinical advancement, and
to prepare the next generation of leaders in child health.
Donations are a critical source of funding for SickKids that is separate and
distinct from government and granting agencies. In 2008/09, financial support
from SickKids Foundation to the hospital totaled $60.4 million. The funds went
towards infrastructure and supporting physicians, researchers and scientists who
compete for national and international research grants.
Hospital statistics:
• SickKids has more than 5,200 health-care staff and 630 physicians
• SickKids sees more than 300,000 patient visits a year. More than
1,740,000 patients have visited clinics at SickKids in the last five years

As one of the teaching hospitals for The University of Toronto, SickKids provides
education, training and specialized paediatric experience to medical students and
residents from the Faculty of Medicine, and nursing education to the students of the
Faculty of Nursing.

PAWS (Pets at Work) Program
The Therapeutic Clown Program
The Toronto District School Board offers classes to students in all grades from
kindergarten to grade 12.
The Children’s Council is a group of patients and former patients who give the hospital
advice on how to make Sick Kids an even better place for children.
The Family Advisory Committee is a group of volunteers – parents, grandparents, &
former patients – who give the hospital advice on issues that affect patients and families.
Every year approximately 1,200 people in the Volunteer Resources department
volunteer almost 87,000 hours of service in many areas of the hospital.
The Atrium
The Atrium includes 9 stories of clinical space above ground and a service floor below
ground level.
All patients and patient related services moved to the Atrium on March 14, 1993.
Approximately 800 babies annually are admitted to the NICU (Neo-natal Intensive
Care Unit) on the 3rd floor.
The Atrium was designed by Zeidler Roberts Architects, the same architects who
designed the Eaton Centre.
Hospital regulations decree that all patient rooms must have windows (that’s why most
hospitals have many wings) because natural light helps promote the healing process.
Most patients (85%) have a private room, with a full private washroom, storage space
for parent and child’s clothing, TV, phone and a day bed so a parent can stay the night.
